Electronic prescribing is the electronic transfer, computerized electronic filling, and delivery of a health care prescription, replacing the older manual paper and sometimes even plastic-tipped faxed prescriptions. EMR software can be used by physicians in their own offices, or by specialists such as nurses or pharmacists at local pharmacies. This technology has greatly increased the efficiency and effectiveness of medicine, reducing document handling, paper waste, insurance claims, and more.
The growing need to reduce medical errors and Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) is propelling the growth of the electronic prescribing market. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, medication errors harm an estimated 1.5 million people every year, costing at least $3.5 billion annually (20) (N). It is estimated that ADEs affect approximately 2 million hospital stays annually and prolong the length of stay by 1.7–4.6 days (3) (N). By using e-prescribing systems, these errors can be lower in most of the scenarios by almost 85%. Increasing technological advancement in electronic prescribing technology is again fostering the growth of the market.
North America is projected to exhibit significant growth over the forecast period and this is attributed to the increasing opioid crisis in the U.S. which is raising the adoption of e-prescribing technology. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), in 2019, an estimated 10.1 million people aged 12 or older misused opioids in the past year. Specifically, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers and 745,000 people used heroin. Furthermore, increasing government support for deploying such technology in the healthcare industry is further anticipated to propel the growth of the market.
