Speed Record of Data Transmission Attains 319 TB Per Second

This speed of transmission is almost 2 times the last record for 178 Tb/s, which was set not more than a year before.

World record of the fastest speed of internet has been completely crushed as engineers from Japan have proven a rate of data transmission 319 Tb/s (Terabits per second) by optical fibers. This record was set with fibers measuring around 3,000 km (1,864 miles), which apparently is compatible with the existing infrastructure of cable.

It is difficult for overstating just how immensely fast this speed of transmission. It’s almost 2 times the last record for 178 Tb/s, which was set not more than a year before and 7x faster compared to the record prior to that (44.2 Tb/s) from the investigational photonic chip. The NASA manages with “just” 400 Gb/s, which absolutely demolishes the currently available speeds to consumers: fastest connections of home internet  topping out to 10 Gb/s in Japan, the US, and New Zealand. This breakthrough was attained using existing infrastructure of fiber optics, with technological advances added on. Data travels down nearly 70 km (43.5 miles) of the optical fibers, before it meets optical amplifiers for keeping the signal solid over far distances. There it runs by two new fiber amplifier types, one doped into erbium and other into thulium, prior to undergoing a collective process termed Raman amplification. Signal sequences then are directed to a new optical fiber segment, and repeating the process enabled the team for transmitting data above a expanse of 3,001 km (1,864.7 miles).

Significantly, this optical fiber of four-core has an exact similar diameter as the fiber of standard single-core, after its protective cladding is considered. Meaning that this technology must be relatively upfront for implementing into existing infrastructure of fiber optic. The paper describing this accomplishment was presented in the International Conference on Optical Fiber Communications previous month.
