Poor Sleep May Create Negative Emotional Bias

They used computational models to inspect how sleep prevents damage to old memories and amalgamates newly-encoded memories. Sleep helps rearrange memories and delivers them in a well-organized way, as well as updates new and old memories.

Now, according to the new research, lack of sleep for 5 successive nights leads people to view neutral and pleasant images unfavorably, suggesting that poor sleep can produce a negative emotional bias. The research was published in the Sleep Research journal. The feeling of sleepless nights is a familiar one to many. Poor sleep or lack of sleep can affects an individual's emotional state as well as their working performance. People become frustrated and irritable when they do not sleep properly at night.

Moreover, lack of sleep also effect a person’s emotional well-being. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 35% of adults in the U. S. sleep less than 7 hours per night. During this research, participants observed neutral and pleasant images after 5 nights of restricted sleep and 5 nights of normal sleep. The team found that participants may react negatively to these images after sleep deprivation compared to normal sleep. According to the new research, lack of sleep brings negative emotional bias and has important implications for daily living, as well as in the clinical setting.
