Immunity Responses to COVID-19 Differ from Recovered to Vaccinated Patients

A new study shows that mRNA vaccinated people are more immune to the novel coronavirus and its new variants as compared to recovered COVID-19 patients.

Scientists from the University of Oxford interpreted differing immune responses of recovered COVID-19 patients. They observed that every individual possess different efficiency in immunity and respond uniquely to the virus.  Further, they noticed that recovered patients of COVID-19 didn’t show any measurable immune evidences for novel coronavirus after six months post-infection. However, there are certain serum samples of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, which claim that certain patients could respond to and protect themselves from circulating new variants of the virus.

The natural immunity enhancement is unpredictable and variable when it generates from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Some of the recovered patients show 100 times higher immunity power as compared to others. However, the recent study showed that people vaccinated with mRNA are more immune to new variants than naturally infected and recovered patients. People vaccinated with two doses possess 10 times higher immunity than recovered COVID-19 patients.

The new study was published in Science Translational Medicine journal clarifying immunity after mRNA vaccination to be stronger than recovered infected subjects. SARS-CoV-2 possesses the infamous spike protein that attaches to receptor in human cells called ACE2. The interface between receptor ACE2 and spike protein forms receptor binding domain (RBD) fragments, which infect human cells. The mRNA vaccine-elicited antibodies play a major role in boosting immunity and preventing infection. Those antibodies target more on boarder range of area of RBD as compared to the antibodies elicited by natural infection.  Researchers also stated that vaccine provides antigens to the immune system that enhances immune system and makes it stronger  as compared to SARS-CoV-2 natural infections.
