EMROD to Test World-first Wireless Power Transmission

The newly developed system works by transmitting electric energy wirelessly over long distances using electromagnetic waves safely and efficiently.

EMROD, a New Zealand-based startup has developed the world’s first commercial high-power, long-range, wireless power transmission as a promising alternative to existing copper line technology. Newly developed wireless power transmission technology can safely deliver power over long distances. Moreover, the company is working on implementing new technology in the country as soon as possible. The system was designed and built in Auckland in cooperation with New Zealand's Callaghan Innovation. EMROD's new wireless system can transmit large amounts of power between two points.

The system works by transmitting electric energy wirelessly over long distances using electromagnetic waves safely and efficiently. The new system has received some government funding for its development. Moreover, the newly developed wireless system has received a Royal Society Award nomination. The wireless power transmission system will be tested by Powerco, New Zealand's power distributor company. However, the dream of wireless power transmission is not new. In the 1890s, Nikola Tesla proved that he could power bulbs from around two miles with a 140-foot Tesla coil. Tesla's dream was to erect giant towers across the globe that could reach electricity wirelessly to any place in the world, powering industries, businesses, homes, and electric ships.

Now, the dream has come to reality almost after120 years. EMROD developed a commercial-capacity wireless power transmission system. Powerco is also investing in EMROD, whose technology can transmit large amounts of electric power more efficiently between any two points connecting with line-of-sight relays. However, the system is currently in its prototype form and the company will develop another system for Powerco, expected to be delivered by October 2020. The system will spend some months in the laboratory for testing before moving to a field. Moreover, EMROD is collaborating with radio spectrum management authorities to meet every safety standard throughout its development process.
